Here is an extremely unusual fossil. This is Plesioteuthis prisca, a fossil squid, from the famous Solnhofen Limestone of Germany. Squid are extremely rare in the fossil record, perhaps due to the absence of hard parts which are more easily fossilized than soft tissue. The Solnhofen Limestone is world-famous for the exquisite preservation of fossils. This fossil squid is easily seen on the large, natural plate of lithographic limestone. The phragmacone and soft body tissue are very nicely displayed. This is a very unusual fossil squid from a very famous fossil site.
