Here is a large ammonite from an unusual location. This is Gymnites incultus from the Triassic of Greece. Triassic cephalopods are not common in the fossil record - there are only a few places in the world where they are found. This type of ammonite has a very smooth shell and a narrow keel. This large specimen is quite 3-dimensional and exhibits fine detail. The coiling pattern of the mollusk is easily seen. This specimen has been polished on all sides to reveal the striking, natural, white-and-red coloration. The ammonite displays well on the block of the reddish limestone in which it was found. Also, there two other ammonite pieces preserved on the plate. This is a very collectible specimen of unusual Triassic ammonites.
