This is a very beautiful fossil echinoderm. It is a fabulous specimen of Gogia spiralis from the Middle Cambrian of Utah. This primitive echinoderm used to be known as an eocrinoid, but has now been re-classified as a cystoid. This specimen exhibits incredible detail. The elongate, multi-plated, sac-like holdfast is intact and very distinct. The large-plated, nodose calyx is quite evident, and the twisted, spiraled arms are beautifully displayed in an open, splayed position. The large fossil has excellent color and contrast and is wonderfully showcased on the rectangular plate of shale. This is a very well-prepared example of this very old echinoderm.
