Here is a specimen that we recently obtained in an old collection. This is Scaphites warreni from the Carlile Formation of South Dakota. This type of ammonite has a very loosely-coiled body chamber. The cephalopod is very 3-dimensional and almost completely free of matrix. The coarse ribbing pattern and the broad, rounded keel are nicely displayed. The suture pattern of the strangely-coiled ammonite is well defined. This is a fine specimen of Scaphites warreni from the Cretaceous.
