This is a very rare ''modern'' stromatolite slab from Australia. Authorities believe that stromatolites were formed by masses of green or blue-green algae, or ''cyanobacteria''. This particular stromatolite is over 10,000 years old, but still retains the structure of modern stromatolites (unlike the fossil stromatolites that are billions of years old!) This extremely detailed slab has been highly polished on one side for optimal display. The unique pattern of the stromatolites is beautifully showcased, and the different forms of the selenite replacement are quite striking. This is a very fine example of this very young stromatolite from Down Under.
