This is a spectacular eurypterid fossil. It is a HUGE Eurypterus remipes from the Silurian of New York. Eurypterus remipes is the State Fossil of New York, and is one of the most unusual arthropods in the fossil record. Eurypterids were thought to be one of the first aquatic animals to explore onto land. This distinct specimen is huge for this type - almost ten inches long! The merastome is nicely centered on the large, rectangular plate of waterlime that also contains a very fine partial eurypterid. This is an extremely large sea scorpion fossil that is wonderfully showcased on its display plate.
