This is a very interesting fossil. It is a detailed stromatolite from the Carboniferous of Kansas. Authorities believe that stromatolites were formed by masses of green or blue-green algae, or ''cyanobacteria''. This ''mass'' specimen is very robust and exhibits unique stuctural form. Most stromatolites are extremely massive structures, but this specimen is just perfect for a shelf or cabinet. This is a great example of a distinct stromatolite fossil from Kansas.
