This is an interesting plate of brachiopods. It is a slab with two Paraspirifer bownockeri from Sylvania, Ohio. In 1991, we were fortunate enough to collect in the Sylvania Quarries for the famous Phacops trilobites found there. While digging for the trilobites, we also found a smattering of Paraspirifer brachiopods. Both specimens on this plate are extremely 3-dimensional and are replaced with golden pyrite. The brachiopod in the upper part of the picture is still tightly attached to the matrix. The lower brachiopod, however, is loose and can be taken out of the matrix to examine the other side. When you get done looking at it, simply place it back in the original depression in the plate of shale. The brachiopods have fine detail - the coarse radial ornamentation and the fine growth lines are nicely exhibited. The fossils have good color and contrast. They are well positioned on the plate of shale. This is a very displayable plate of these large, obese brachiopods from the Silica Shale.
