This is an excellent set of fossil bird feathers from the Eocene of Colorado. Bird remains are quite rare in the fossil record - even solitary feathers are very uncommon. The feather on the left is long and thin, probably a wing feather. But the feathers on the right are quite unusual. This looks like a tuft of down feathers. This grouping is extremely rare, because fossil feathers are usually found as single occurences. These fine down feathers exhibit extraordinary detail - the individual filiments are very apparent. The fossils have excellent dark-brown color and contrasts beautifully with the khaki-colored matrix. Both sets of feathers are almost perfectly centered on the squared plate of shale. This is a very collectible specimen of an extremely scarce multiple occurence of fossil feathers from the Green River Formation.
