This is a very impressive brachiopod specimen. There are two HUGE examples of Paraspirifer bownockeri on this plate from the famous Silica Shale of Ohio. The brachiopods are extremely 3-dimensional and exhibit fine detail. The fossil shells have both valves present and are very nicely articulated. The pointed ''wings'' of the brachs are intact, and the coarse ornamentation is wonderfully displayed. The brachiopods are replaced by iron pyrite or ''fool's gold'', and the golden coloration is easily seen. The fossils have been prepared with an air abrasive machine, not acid-etched like most are, so the detail is extremely well preserved. This is a natural, textbook specimen of these obese brachiopods from the Devonian.
