Here is a primitive Canadian echinoderm. This is a cystoid (Pleurocystites) from the Ordovician layers of Ontario, Canada. The theca of this extinct echinoderm is beautifully articulated and the detail is excellent. The plate structure is superb and the pore-rhombs are easily seen. Both of the uniserial arms are intact which is highly unusual. A portion of the stem is still tightly attached. The cream-colored fossil contrasts nicely with the gray matrix. The cystoid is beautifully centered on the semi-rectangular plate of limestone. This is a "textbook" example of this unusual Ordovician echinoderm.
