Here is an extremely rare fossil insect. This is a very nice wasp (Hymenoptera) from the Eocene of Utah. This insect is unusual in that it has the ovipositor (egg depositor) intact. The long ovipositor is well preserved and easily seen. The wasp has great color and contrast and is well centered on the large plate of shale that contains other insects on the back side of the plate. This is a wonderful specimen of an unusual fossil wasp from the Green River Formation.
