Here is a very nice cephalopod. This is Hoploscaphites sp. from the Cretaceous of South Dakota. This type has many ribs that are coarse in the beginning and becoming very fine near the living chamber. The keel is flat and narrow with a row of prominent nodes on either side. This ammonite is very 3-dimensionally preserved and exhibits fine detail. Much of the nacre is still present and a wide variety of colors is quite evident. The ammonite is wonderfully perched on a large block of concretionary matrix that also contains other fossil cephalopods. This is a very displayable example of Hoploscaphites from the Cretaceous.
