This is a very rare vertebrate fossil. It is an intact jawbone from Hippopotamus gorgops from Java. This specimen was recently acquired from a major fossil collection. This extinct Hippopotamus was taller and longer than the modern Hippo. Hippopotamus gorgops also had a more slender tail, and eyes that bulge even more than a common Hippo's. Another difference is that Hippopotamus gorgops had only one pair of incisors in the lower jaw, while the modern Hippo has 2 pairs. There are still three large teeth firmly embedded in the jaw. The teeth are wonderfully intact and display quite nicely from all sides. The teeth have well preserved enamel and nice, natural coloration. The jaw is displayed on a nice, white display block. This is a distinct dentary specimen from a rare, extinct Hippopotamus.
