Here is a stunning plate of ammonites from the Jurassic of Russia. There are two different cephalopods on the plate. The ammonite on the left side of the plate is a wonderful example of Quenstedtoceras. This ammonite has very coarse ribs with a somewhat rounded keel. The mollusk on the right side is a nice specimen of Paracadoceras. This "wide-bodied" ammonite has a finer ribbing pattern and a very rounded keel. Both ammonites are extremely 3-dimensional and exhibit great detail. The inner whorls of both cephalopods are wonderfully displayed. Perhaps the most striking feature of this piece is the color of the fossils. Both ammonites retain the mother-of-pearl shell and are gorgeously iridescent. They almost appear as if they were replaced by fire opal - the colors are that intense. The colors run from red to green depending on the angle of the light. The fossils are wonderfully perched on the large block of concretionary matrix. This is a very displayable plate of colorful ammonites from the Jurassic of Russia.
