This is a very interesting grouping of fossils. These are colorful Hyolithes cecrops from the Middle Cambrian of Utah. This organisms have remained an enigma since the beginning of modern scientific description. Authorities are unsure of where they belong in a classification of the invertebrates. They may be related to mollusks, but in a separate phylum. Hyolithids have also been found in the famous Burgess Shale. These large specimens are nicely preserved and exhibit fine detail. The conical shape of the organisms is beautifully displayed, and the textured pattern is quite evident. The fossils have great color and contrast and are well presented on the natural plate of shale. This is a very colorful multiple example of this problematic fossil.
