This is a very distinct gastropod fossil. It is a fine Hormotoma major from the Ordovician of Iowa. This specimen was recently acquired from an old collection. The fossil snail has been removed from the surrounding matrix so that it can be viewed from all angles. The high-spired gastropod is extremely 3-dimensional and exhibits very good detail. The textbook whorling pattern is very easily seen. This is an excellent specimen of this uncommon Paleozoic gastropod from Iowa.
