This is an outstanding stromatolite specimen. This is a distinct Girvanella stromatolite from the Precambrian of Michigan. Authorities believe that stromatolites were formed by masses of green or blue-green algae, or ''cyanobacteria''. This stromatolite is estimated to be 2.3 to 2.5 billion years old! This striking slice of stromatolite has been highly polished on one side for optimal display. The gorgeous pink coloration of the mineral replacement and the unique pattern of the Girvanella make for a stunning exhibit. This is a very large example of a beautiful stromatolite from Michigan.
