Here is a wonderful specimen of a complete fossil brittlestar. This is Protaster sp. from the Rochester Shale of New York. Brittlestars are quite uncommon in the fossil record due to the delicate nature of the thin arms. The central disk of the brittlestar is prominently exhibited, and the five thin arms are splayed out to create a beautiful display. The fossil has good color and contrast and is well centered on the large plate of shale that also contains two disarticulated brittlestar arms! This is a great example of a rare fossil brittlestar from the Silurian of New York.
