This is a very rare stromatolite slab from the Paleoproterozoic of Canada. Authorities believe that stromatolites were formed by masses of green or blue-green algae, or ''cyanobacteria''. This particular stromatolite was discovered in 1954 and has been dated to 1.9 billion years old! This extremely detailed slab has been highly polished on one side for optimal display. The unique pattern of the stromatolites is beautifully showcased, and the different shades of the mineral replacement are quite striking. This is a very fine example of this historically important stromatolite from the Great Lakes.
Note: This specimen was found outside the nature preserve, and is therefore legal to acquire.
