Here is a nice example of a carpoid from the Middle Cambrian. This primitive echinoderm is Castericystis vali from Utah. Carpoids are very rare in the fossil record. This example is more inflated than many specimens from this site and exhibits very fine detail. The long stele is wonderfully preserved (to the very tip) and tightly articulated with the theca. The theca has very granulose plates. The lone, biserial arm (typical of carpoids) is mostly intact and displays good plate structure. The black fossil contrasts nicely with the gray matrix. It is well presented on the semi-rectangular plate of shale. This is a very good specimen of a carpoid.
