Here is a very nice ammonite. This is Sphenodiscus lenticularis from the Creteaceous of South Dakota. This 3-dimensional specimen has been removed from the matrix so that it can be viewed from all sides. This type of ammonite is quite lenticular in shape. The planispiral shell of the cephalopod has a very sharp keel. The ammonite exhibits the suture pattern in beautiful fashion. The white sutures contrast nicely with the dark brown shell of the fossil cephalopod. This is a fine example of this unusual ammonite from the Fox Hills Formation.
