This is an excellent mass of fossil feathers from the Eocene of Utah. Bird remains are quite rare in the fossil record - even solitary feathers are very uncommon. This clump of feathers exhibits fantastic detail - the individual barbs are clearly defined. The dark brown fossil contrasts beautifully with the khaki-colored matrix. The feathers are well positioned on the plate of shale that also contains a few insects. This is a textbook example of fossil feathers from the Green River Formation.
