This is a very collectible vertebrate fossil. It is a rare Hegetotherium sp., a mammal from the Lower Miocene Santa Cruz Formation of Patagonia, Argentina. This unusual specimen has the skull, lower jaws, neck vertebrae, and a leg bone articulated. The skull is esentially complete, with almost all the teeth still intact. The lower jaw has ALL the teeth intact - a complete set of teeth like this is very rare. The back side of the skull is still encased in rock, but you can still see some bones sticking out. The neck vertebrae can be followed down to a leg bone - the marrow on the inside of the bone is even preserved! The dark brown coloring of the bones contrasts beautifully with the greenish-tan matrix - it's a wonderful display specimen. This is an incredibly articulated and well-preserved example of a rare Hegetotherium from South America.
