Here is a beautiful specimen of a rare stromatolite. This is a Lyons River Stromatolite from the Precambrian of Australia. This large stromatolite is reported to be 1.7 billion years old! Authorities believe that stromatolites were formed by masses of green or blue-green algae, or ''cyanobacteria''. This distinct plate of stromatolite has been highly polished on one side for optimal display, and the layered depositional pattern is wonderfully showcased. The reddish-pinkish-orange coloration of the mineral replacement is quite striking. This is a gorgeous stromatolite that just happens to be extremely rare.
