Here is a very rare echinoderm specimen from the Mississippian of Illinois. This special piece was found 30 years ago and was recently acquired from a MAJOR fossil collection. At the bottom of the piece is a very complete example of Pentremites symmetricus. This blastoid has its full complement of LONG, fine brachioles preserved, which is a very rare occurrence. There is also a long stem tightly attached to the blastoid, which is also very unusual. The blastoid has good color and contrast and is nicely showcased on the squared plate of matrix that is just loaded with bryozoans. This is a textbook specimen of a rare Pentremites symmetricus blastoid with the delicate brachioles and stem preserved.
