Here is a very pretty specimen of a fossil bivalve. This is Clinocardium meekianum from the Pliocene of California. The valve of the ''cockle'' is very 3-dimensionally preserved and exhibits great detail. The fine radial ornamentation is clearly defined, and the growth lines are easily seen. The whitish color of the fossil contrasts nicely with the grey matrix. The mollusk is extremely inflated and makes for a stunning display. This is a very aesthetic example of a fossil bivalve.
