Here is a very distinct fossil nautiloid. This is Cymatoceras saholaons from the Cretaceous of Madagascar. This large nautiloid has been sliced in half, and both halves have been highly polished. The primitive, straight-line sutures define this fossil as a rare nautiloid rather than an ammonite. The coiling pattern of the nautiloid is easily seen, and the individual body chambers are quite distinct. Some of the body chambers are hollow and filled with tiny, sparkling crystals. The colorful mineral replacement makes for a beautiful display. This is a very striking specimen of a fossil nautiloid from the Cretaceous.
