This is a very unusual echinoderm fossil. It is a large Scalenocystites strimplei, a solutin carpoid, from the Middle Ordovician of Minnesota. Carpoids were primitive echinoderms similar to cystoids, but much rarer. This specimen is well articulated, showing the holdfast, or ''tail'', and the distinct body. The plate structure of the carpoid is beautifully displayed under magnification. The fossil is well showcased on the colorful plate of shale that also contains two brachiopods. This is a fabulous example of this rare, enigmatic echinoderm from Minnesota.
