This is a beautiful crab from a very unusual location. It is Carcinus exculptus from the Miocene of Italy. This site is known for the large assortment of fossil animals found there, but crabs are extremely uncommon. This specimen is complete with many legs and both claws intact (RARE!). The crab has been prepared ventrally, which is quite unusual. The fossil crustacean has great natural color and displays impressively in the center of the rectangular plate of shale. This is a great example of this very distinct crab from Italy.
