Here is a very interesting fossil. This is Stromatoporella granulata, a fossil sponge, from the Devonian of Arizona. Sponges are very rare in the fossil record - the spicules of a sponge are loosely held together by a soft, leathery integument. The sponge falls apart rather quickly upon death. Usually, only isolated spicules are found. This fossil sponge is a large mass and very 3-dimensionally preserved. This is a very intriguing example of a fossil sponge.
