Here is a very nice specimen of a Silurian gastropod. This fossil snail is Platyostoma niagarense from the Waldron Shale of Indiana. The quarry where this specimen was found is now filled with water and closed to collecting. There is a fabulous specimen preserved on this plate. The fossil is extremely 3-dimensional and exhibits fine detail. The coiling pattern of the mollusk is well defined - even the very tiny inner coils of the specimen are intact. The black fossil contrasts beautifully with the light-colored matrix. The gastropod is well centered on the squared plate of shale. This is a textbook specimen of a Silurian gastropod from this classic site.
