Here is a HUGE cystoid from the Silurian of New York. This is Caryocrinites ornatus from the Rochester Shale. This cystoid displays wonderful detail. A lengthy portion of articulated stem is still tightly attached to the cup. The cup is very robust and composed of large, highly ornamented plates. The extremely long, unbranching arms of the cystoid are present and exhibit the fine pinnules in beautiful fashion. The fossil has very nice color and contrast. It is beautifully centered on the large, rectangular plate of shale. This is a very displayable specimen of a primitive cystoid.
