Here is a very interesting fossil coral. This is Favosites venustum from the Silurian of New York. This tabulate coral consists of tightly packed corallites with thin walls and resembles a honeycomb. This 3-dimensional specimen exhibits great detail - the individual corallites are quite distinct. All sides of the coral display well, since the fossil is fully free of matrix. This is a fine example of a fossil coral from the Rochester Formation.
