Here is a nice specimen of a rare Middle Cambrian cystoid. This is a Gogia guntheri from Box Elder County, Utah. This primitive echinoderm used to be known as an eocrinoid, but has now been re-classified as a cystoid. The preservation of this primitive echinoderm is just wonderful. The elongate, multi-plated, tail-like holdfast is very distinct, and the large-plated, ornate calyx is extremely detailed. The long, segmented arms are beautifully displayed in a widely splayed position. The distinct cystoid has good color and contrast and is nicely showcased on the squared matrix plate. This is a very nice specimen of this rare, primitive echinoderm from the Spence Shale.
