This is a beautiful fossil crab. It is Carcinus exculptus from the Miocene of Italy. This site is known for the large assortment of fossil animals found there, but crabs are uncommon. This specimen is complete with the legs and both claws intact. The inflated crab has very nice detail preserved, especially on the carapace and large claws. The fossil crustacean has great natural color and displays impressively in the center of the rectangular plate of sandstone that also contains a distinct bivalve. This is a fabulous example of this very distinct crab from Italy.
