This is one of the rarest types of echinoderms found in Utah. It is Cothurnocystis bifida, a carpoid, from the House Range of Millard County. Carpoids were extremely primitive echinoderms somewhat related to cystoids. This specimen is complete, with the tail pointed downward. The plate structure is nicely intact, which is almost never preserved. The striking dark coloration contrasts beautifully with the light grey plate of shale. This is easily one of the best examples of Cothurnocystis bifida we have ever had.
