Here is an extremely rare fossil starfish. This is Neopaleaster enigmaticus(?) from the Renault Limestone of Waterloo, Illinois. The site in which this specimen was found has been dug out for years, and the only way to obtain specimens from this site is through the dispersal of old collections. This specimen was recently acquired from an old collection. This starfish has all five arms intact (RARE!) and is nicely inflated and exhibits wonderful detail. The plate structure of the echinoderm is clearly defined. The starfish is well showcased on the rectangular plate of shale. This is easily the best example of this rare starfish from Waterloo that we've ever seen.
