This is a wonderful specimen of a puzzling fossil. This is a fabulous multiple plate of Monograptus uniformis, a graptolite, from the Ordovician of Germany. Graptolites are extinct marine organisms which are still argued about by authorities as to where they fit into the big picture. These fossils have small, spine-like, clearly defined projections which radiate from the body, almost looking like a hacksaw blade. The graptolites have excellent color and contrast and are well presented on the long, natural-edged plate of shale. This is a very fine multiple example of this truly enigmatic fossil.
