This is a gorgeous stromatolite specimen from the Precambrian of Australia. Authorities believe that stromatolites were formed by masses of green or blue-green algae, or ''cyanobacteria''. It is believed that this stromatolite is BILLIONS of years old! This large slab has been highly polished on one side for optimal display. The depositional layers are wonderfully defined, and the colorful mineral replacement is just spectacular. The black lines of hematite combined with the golden flashes of tigereye and the red bands of jasper make for a very striking display. This is a beautiful specimen of this exotic stromatolite from ''Down Under''.
