This is a fine ammonite specimen from an interesting location. It is Prolylleceras sp. from the Cretaceous of Peru. The fossil is well preserved in a natural chumk of limestone matrix. This 3-dimensional cephalopod exhibits extremely strong ribbing and five rows of nodes on the shoulders and the keel. The inner whorls of the ammonite are displayed on both sides of the specimen. The natural black coloration is extremely unusual. This is a very well preserved example of this unusual ammonite from South America.
