Here is a very pretty ammonite. This is Sphenodiscus lenticularis from the Creteaceous of South Dakota. This 3-dimensional specimen has been removed from the matrix so that it can be viewed from all sides. This type of ammonite is quite lenticular in shape. The planispiral shell of the cephalopod has a very sharp keel. The ammonite exhibits the colorful ammolite in beautiful fashion. The shell of the fossil cephalopod flashes the reds and greens typical of an ammolitic ammonite (hard to see in photo). This is a very fine example of this unusual ammonite from the Fox Hills Formation. (The white streak is in the photo, not on the fossil.)
