Here is a very unusual fossil from a classic location. This is Coprinoscolex ellongimus from the Mazon Creek fauna of Illinois. This famous site (Pit 11) has been closed to collecting for a number of years. This type is called a ''leech'', but is actually an Echiura, a close relative of annelid worms. This specimen is preserved in a siderite concretion. Both halves of the concretion are present, so both part and counterpart are intact. The fossil has very good color and contrast and is well centered in the concretion. This is a good example of a fossil ''leech'' from the Coal Age.
