Here is an extremely uncommon fossil. This is a rare Trachytheutis lebanotica squid from the famous Cenomanian sublithographic limestone of Lebanon. Due to political unrest, specimens from this location are becoming increasingly difficult to obtain. Squid are incredibly rare in the fossil record, probably due to the absence of hard parts, which are more easily fossilized than soft tissue. The Lebanese Limestone Quarries are world-famous for the exquisite preservation of their fossils, especially the fish and shrimp. This fossil squid is easily seen in the center of the large, rectangular plate of sublithographic limestone. There is also a complete Carpopenaeus callirostris shrimp preserved on the plate. This is a very fine association of a fossil shrimp and rare squid with ink pouch preserved.
This fossil was collected and obtained legally, and is also being sold legally.
