Here is a very nice specimen of a Silurian gastropod. This fossil snail is Platyostoma niagarense from the Waldron Shale of Indiana. The original quarry is now filled with water. There is a very nice example of this gastropod on the plate. The fossil is extremely 3-dimensional and exhibits fine detail. The coiling pattern of the mollusk is well defined - there is also bryozoan growing on the surface of the snail. The dark brown fossil contrast beautifully with the light-colored matrix. The gastropod is well showcased on the large, natural plate of shale that also contains a brachiopod. And both fossils have been prepared from both sides of the plate! This is a very interesting specimen of a Silurian gastropod from this classic site.
