This is an excellent specimen of Lituites (Trilacinoceras) hunanense from the Ordovician of China. This strange nautiloid starts growing in a coiling pattern, and then straightens out. This cephalopod is very 3-dimensionally preserved and exhibits fine detail. The straight-line sutures are easily seen, and the individual body chambers are quite evident. The specimen has nice white coloration and contrasts wonderfully with the reddish-brown matrix. The cephalopod is nicely centered on the rectangular block of matrix that has another Lituites on the bottom right of the plate. This is a very aesthetic specimen of this unusual semi-coiled nautiloid.
