Here is a very nice specimen of a Silurian gastropod. This fossil snail is Platyostoma niagarense from the Waldron Shale of Indiana. The quarry where this specimen was found is now filled with water. The fossil is extremely 3-dimensional and exhibits fine detail. The coiling pattern of the mollusk is well defined - even the very tiny inner coils of the specimen are intact. The beautiful brown fossil contrasts wonderfully with the light-colored matrix. The gastropod is well showcased on the small plate of shale. This is a textbook specimen of a Silurian gastropod from this classic site.
