Here is a wonderful specimen of a fossil brittlestar. This is Protaster stellifer from the Rochester Shale of New York. Brittlestars are quite uncommon in the fossil record due to the delicate nature of the thin arms. The central disk of the brittlestar is prominently exhibited, and the arms are splayed out to create a beautiful display. The fossil has good color and contrast and is well showcased on the large plate of shale. This is a fine example of a rare fossil brittlestar from the Silurian of New York.
