Here is a very distinct specimen of Archimedes sp. from Illinois. This unusual, corkscrew-shaped bryozoan is only found in the Mississippian of North America. This bryozoan colony attached itself to the ocean floor with the spiraling fronds in an upward position. The fossil is very 3-dimensional and exhibits fine detail. The white color of the fossil contrasts wonderfully with the grey matrix. The screw is well presented on the rectangular plate of limestone. This is a very displayable example of this strange-looking bryozoan.
