This is an unusual fossil tooth. It is a large Platybelodon tooth from the Upper Miocene of China. Platybelodon was a Mastodont animal, with two small tusks and a large shovel-scoop comprising the front of the lower jaw. This 3-dimensional tooth still has the long roots present which are easily seen. The enamel on the crown of the tooth is intact, and the cusps of the tooth are clearly defined. The tooth is free of matrix and displays beautifully from all angles. This is an excellent tooth from this bizarre-looking animal.
